“Anxiety: The True “Disorder”. Never a pessimist, always an optimist, I hope that there will one day be a cure to eliminate anxiety disorders. We will always deal with the everyday anxieties of life, but when we talk about having an anxiety disorder, we are talking about a whole other ball of wax.
Until the day comes, however, when a cure is found, there will be many people who suffer on a daily basis with the terrifying symptoms of a disorder which holds little evidence of a forthcoming “cure.” I will always hope and contribute (as a clinician) to finding a cure, but for now, we must learn that there is treatment to help those with this disorder.
With the combination of medication paired with therapy, nutrition and exercise, we can help to minimize and cope with the physical and mental symptoms that plague a person who lives with an anxiety disorder.
There is a real difference between normal everyday anxiety and when anxiety is brought upon by a true chemical imbalance. Mind over matter can help to minimize symptoms of an attack, but it’s important to realize that once the neurotransmitters in the brain are released, misfired or have not fired at all (which causes the “attacks”), that the effects are out of our control and in the hands of our faith and our ability to cope with symptoms until they go away.
I wish it were as easy as talking oneself out of an anxiety or panic attack, for instance, but we do realize these are real disorders with real repercussions and loss of quality of life.
With the help of medication (for true disorders) AND therapy paired together (including faith or anything that helps), we can TREAT the symptoms of the anxiety disorder and live a happy and fulfilled life.
Living with an anxiety disorder is no picnic, but again the good news is that there are ways to help decrease the fears and minimize the fight!

08|May|2008 4I have come in contact with many suffering from axiety disorder and until recently I realized that I cannot help those who do not want to help themselves. While there are many different treatments it’s dishearting to know how few seek help. I suppose thatis another sympton of the disorder. Great article Dr. KC!

08|May|2008 5You know - there is just something about knowing there is help to be had. Yes, you pull no punches, and you tell us that is is serious, but then in the same soft breath you let us all know that there is help - both medically and spiratually.
I love the approach - because you let everyone know - that you will always be there to help us through the hard times…

08|May|2008 6Dear Brandi,
I know it can be frustrating to want to help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves as I have come across that many times in my own career.
Your comment has inspired me to write an article on this very kind of person. The one who suffers with an anxiety disorder or even another disorder, but is apprehensive or out right refuses to get the help they need. You are absolutely correct. Not getting help can be part of the disorder itself.
Please refer to my article entitled, “Anxiety Disorder-Apprehensive to Treatment?”. You will get much insight to your comment there.
I hope you enjoy the post.
Thank you so much for your comment and please keep reading.

08|May|2008 7Dear Benny,
Thank you for your very special comment.
I do in fact, try to take both approaches you mentioned when attempting to help someone. The practical and realistic side of what’s going on mixed with a most positive and empathetic outlook for treatment and feeling better, I believe, is the way to go! It is a great mix of professionalism and good “bed side” manner if you ask me. I try to practice the way I would want a doctor to treat me if I were to need assistance with an issue.
Your comments always add so much to my day and I appreciate them very much.

20|May|2008 14Dear Scott,
Thank you for being so brave as to share such personal information about yourself. My first question to you is if you are seeing a therapist about your issues or not?
If the doctors you have been seeing have been “writing you off” as you say, then you have just not found the right doctor to help you yet. PLEASE don’t give up the search! You are a very kind, caring, and giving person from what I have read in your blog. You deserve the quality of life that you want. There is not question about that.
Please, if you would like to talk one on one with me or need help in finding help elsewhere, please visit me at DOCintheBiz. There I will be able to help you more personally. Do it for yourself first and then for your family. Remember, YOU ARE WORTH IT!
Thank you again for commenting here and sharing with us!

21|May|2008 16Dearest Scott,
Yes, of course I understand the issues of talking with someone face to face in therapy and that is why I have offered this online counseling service. I think mine goes above and beyond that of any other because I allow people to truly get to know me through my blog before investing any money into getting into more detailed and specific information (the nitty gritty) to start to really tackle issues, make sense of things and make changes.
Again, I invite you to use my services, understand if you don’t, but truly hope you will find a way to dig much deeper into helping yourself somehow. As you said, you don’t want to spend the next 40 years feeling the way you do, AND YOU DON’T HAVE to!
Thank you for writing!
