Attitude, Success, and the Things That Hold Us Back
I consider part of what I do as being a life coach. I work with changing attitudes, thought patterns, self talk, etc., to help people reach goals they never thought they could attain. However, there are both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that get in the way sometimes that are indeed OUT of a person’s control when trying to reach a goal.
The debate will remain on-going whether or not intrinsic and/or extrinsic factors can get in the way, but to add to this debate is not the purpose of this article. The purpose is to discuss what holds us back from success.
I have read and listened to lecture after lecture by one of my favorite gurus, motivational speaker Tony Robbins, who described his struggles at one point of having to live out of his car when he was at his lowest. Look at him now.
I do believe strongly that attitude can pull one through most of the extrinsic factors that get in the way, but sometimes not. The intrinsic ones are a bit harder to get past as well. You can read about my thoughts on these subjects in some of my other articles including:
Are There Such Things as Brain Chemical Imbalances?
How is Our Emotional Health Affected by the Demarcation of Human Rights: Specifically Poverty?
The purpose of this short commentary on attitude, success, and the things that hold us back is to point out my understanding towards those who have true chemical imbalances and who need a little extra in the way of compassion and empathy to reach the goals they aspire to attain. Some people will never get there, and they need someone to help them through this kind of revelation and honest insight as well.
However, I do understand that those with chemical imbalances and the proper treatment for them, can also lead full and productive lives despite their disorder(s). It is not in my make-up to allow them to give up, unless I haven’t any other choice.
I understand chemical imbalances. I understand the fears that go along with mental/emotional disorders and I am here to lend an “ear” virtually to anyone struggling with the frustrations of having uncontrollable ‘demons”, as I have heard them called, hold them back from what they truly want in life.

20|May|2008 2What you are saying is so true!
For the most part there are no bad experiences in life. Only bad reactions!
If we are in the correct frame of mind you will learn from that experience and grow because of it.
Life is one big problem-solving process. As soon as you resolve one problem you automatically create another. The key we have to learn is how not to allow this process to get you down!
There are no problems in life!
Only opportunities to resolve them!

21|May|2008 3Good post!
What’s funny is the start of your post reminded of Tony and then you happened to mention him.
Switching gears …
What’s your take on when food’s the ruler of your thoughts (and your feelings)? For example, a key concept in The Zone diet is managing your insulin levels (to manage your hormone levels) — to keep your body and mind in “the zone.”
I know a few people now that do the The zone and they say they feel good and keep mental clarity throughout the day by managing their insulin levels (proper ratios of proteins, fats, and carbs.)
Combining the ideas from Dr. Burns (http://thebookshare.blogspot.com/2007/10/chemical-imbalance-may-not-be-cause-of.html) and The Zone, it seems to me that ruling out diet and improving thought patterns are a key first step. I would add sleep as well.
There’s probably a very precise question around — when is it not your diet and not your thoughts, but your own natural chemistry working ineffectively against you? I think ruling out thoughts is a tough one (after all, Deepak Chopra teaches us that the thought is the molecule, and we’re the thinker behind our thoughts — and thoughts create our feelings.)
… and when do we not feel good just *thinking* about home-baked, apple pie

21|May|2008 4Dear J.D.,
It’s a true honor that you thought of Tony Robbins when reading my article!
It is also interesting that you brought up food as a way of controlling ones emotions/thoughts/actions. Food plays a HUGE role our body chemistry, including insulin and I will shortly be starting to post articles about this very subject. I hope you can be patient for them to come out as I promise I will be addressing this very issue!
I have to say that my opinion as a professional is that the three most key components to a healthy lifestyle are eating right, getting enough sleep, and our attitude or the way we think. ALL three of these things have been clinically proven to affect our brain chemical imbalances. Remember, I said, “have an affect on”. None of these will entirely “cure” a chemical imbalance, but they can have an affect! I would never rule out what we eat. They did not come out with the crazy cliché “You are what you eat” for nothing. Smiles.
I hope you are subscribed to my RSS feed so that you can get my articles and surely not miss my topic s about eating and the way we feel when I begin that segment of my posts.
Thank you so much for your comment and please keep reading and posting.

21|May|2008 5Dear Jrayrice,
What a fantastic attitude you have!
I couldn’t agree with you more. Every experience, good or bad, can be a learning one as long as we allow it to be. I’m not saying that bad experiences may not bring us down, sometimes, way down, but eventually if we pull ourselves out of the bad place we are in and truly change our thought pattern or reframe the situation, we may learn and come out a better person for it.
Life is about change. Things and people are changing all around us every day! We, ourselves are constantly in a state of flux and change as well. You are correct though. It is the way we learn to handle the changes that will help us to grow as people and be happier and healthier for it.
Thank you so much for your comment. I hope you will continue to read and post your thoughts.

21|May|2008 6Doc - You know I love you, but I am living proof that chemical imbalances in your body can be taken care of with a change in attitude - Ya-ttitude™ if you may. Of course that change in attitude has made me eat better - exercise more and remain calm, cool and collect in all situations. I have honed my focus and concentration and it has allowed me to “cure” what ailed me. I know and understand that there are situations… But - even those would do well with some positive Ya-ttitude™!
I still love you and yur thought process you know…

21|May|2008 7Dear Benny,
I cannot say how happy I am to hear that changing your attitude has changed your life. You are one of the lucky ones I would say. Chemical imbalances that misfire neurotransmitters in the brain causing clinical disorders often times cannot be changed by attitude ALONE. Attitude plays a major part in the treatment (through psychotherapy), but there are certainly more severe cases of chemical imbalances out there that need more than just an attitude adjustment.
Thanks for your comment. Please keep reading and posting.

21|May|2008 8Hi Dr,
Interesting post. My experience is that in order for change to occur, we have to create the space for it to happen. If I can step back and observe myself without judging, then I become open to new possibilities.
Here’s a video I find inspirational. Hope you do as well.

21|May|2008 9Dear Jay,
I agree with your very wise comment. If we are to create a change in ourselves, we must be completely ready to do so. We cannot “judge” ourselves as you say or deny our issue(s). Once we are open to change, it can begin.
I look forward to viewing this video link that you have shared.
Thank you for your comment. Please keep reading and posting.
