We must always keep hope for a bright future even during these economically hard times that many of us are facing today!
I saw an article in USA Today (yes, believe it or not I read articles all day online AND off!). It talked about the great increase in the use of online therapy due to the financial stressors and hardships that people are facing today.
Who even wants to go out in their car anymore with these incredibly elevated gas prices? People are losing their jobs and health benefits left and right due to budget cuts across the country from so many large and small companies! And with no light in sight, it’s no wonder people are falling into chasms of depression, substance abuse, relationships issues including divorce, suicidal ideation, and the loss of self worth. It’s far from a joke. And it’s far from over.
This article I read, spoke of the increase in the use of therapy due to the aforementioned reasons. This brought to mind how the confidentiality, the convenience and especially now, the affordability of online therapy can truly be helpful. The need for therapy in general has increased according to my research because people now, more than ever need to talk to someone about how to deal with their financial crises and how they and their families are being affected. So many, who are losing their jobs and have no where to turn, cannot afford therapy after losing their health benefits, and often feel a sense of embarrassment to have the “need” for therapy to help them through. This goes hand in hand with the terrible stigma put on therapy today. Well, it’s still there, and online therapy is also there to help with the sting!
Are things going to get better? I can only guess they will (being the optimist I am), but of course, I cannot answer that question. How long will it take? I certainly cannot answer that one either. What I do know (and this is only one doctor’s opinion) is that everything happens for a reason and what we see happening to us today is only a building block for tomorrow. No matter how hard times seem, how stressful times are, how hopeless times feel, or how helpless WE may feel that things will turn around, the one thing we always have is the strength and resources within us to keep a positive attitude and to keep the hope that keeps us alive and always moving forward.
Here are few quotes to live by:
We judge of man’s wisdom by his hope. — Ralph Waldo Emerson
Practice hope. As hopefulness becomes a habit, you can achieve a permanently happy spirit. — Norman Vincent Peale
The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof. — Barbara Kingsolver
Thank you for reading and please, if you desire one on one help to get you through the hard times…or you need just a little push to hope…write to us here…at DOCintheBiz.

This article will have a great impact for so many people who are struggling in today’s economy. I recently took a new client suffering with terrible depression from losing his job. We are working through his issues of low self worth and fears of what the future will hold for his family.
Thank you for writing such an understanding and compassionate article on this very subject. It touched me greatly as I now am working with these issues.

I am so happy that are able to help someone who has unfortunately fallen victim to today’s heartless economic system. I’m sure he is in very good hands.
I hope you will continue to give those who are suffering, hope and promise for a better tomorrow given they put in the effort to work hard and keep a healthy attitude!
I am glad you enjoyed my article and thank you for your comment.

This is indeed worrisome. I’m in the hotel business and we are already seeing about 20-30% less business than we did experience just a year ago. So, you can imagine that everyone is cutting back on excess.

I can’t say that is a show that I would care to watch, but things do get a bit out of hand on there and certainly can give some perspective.

Yes, all kinds of industries are feeling the strain, from small to large. It IS worrisome! Those with stable jobs should be thankful and those without, hopeful.

Everyone I know ought to read this article and benefit from it as I have done. There is food for thought here - positive thought. After all is said and done in hard times, it’s positive thinking that is the foundation for hope, and for developing the resolve to move forward, no matter how hard the struggle to do so is.

28|Jul|2008 8Dear Timethief,
Thank you for your very support comment! If everyone could/would think this way, we’d all be a lot better off. However, I do understand that it does not come naturally to some people to think positively. As easy a concept as it seems to be, it is truly not. However, the good news is that people can be taught how to think positively and how to remove negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. Like anything else, it can be learned and needs to be practiced.

28|Jul|2008 9I took to task to Dr. Morton J. Marcus, Economist, who in his recent column took Americans to task as suffering from a degenerative social disease: sloth. So, I emailed him. You might disagree, but then again, maybe not so much.
Read: America, The Slothful, my response at the site.
And yes, I do turn to other methodologies, just this one, felt good to put on paper to professor. Since, he, like knows everything…not.

28|Jul|2008 10Dear Jason,
I cannot say whether or not people have an aversion to working or are just plain lazy, but I would probably disagree with that idea. I think that it can go either way. People are people, all unique and different, not to be lumped into one big generalized category.
Some people are indeed lazy and others are doing everything it takes to find work to feed their families. I’ve never been one into generalizations, stereotypes or judgments, so I would probably have to favor on your side and against the good professor. I’m always ears to listen to others’ perspectives, however that doesn’t mean I’ll agree. I tend to try to think the best of people.
Thank you so much for your insightful comment.

29|Jul|2008 11I love this sentence: “what we see happening to us today is only a building block for tomorrow.” These are difficult times and no doubt people are going through really difficult times personally as a result. It is a likely possibility that my mother-n-law will lose her job. If people can keep that sentence in mind about it being a building block for tomorrow and keep focused on opportunities that can come from this they can make it through. I’m so glad that you are here to help these people. I know you do a great job Doc KC!

29|Jul|2008 12Look at me starting a new business in this economy! I’m either hopeful or crazy (probably a bit of both). You know, life isn’t about security and material things. Those things are nice but life is about relationships and adventure. When have we been closer to those we love? It’s when we need each other to pull together to make it work. Difficult times are times to grow and develop priorities. They are times to sift out the frivilous and keep the meaningful. It’s a time to trust in God and go for what matters in life. Why embrace the stagnant? Embrace the possibilities!

30|Jul|2008 13Dear Jennifer,
I truly do believe that the positive attitude and hope for “tomorrow” will guide us through our hard times and we will find goodness on the other side. I do enjoy helping others with all kinds of issues as I know you do too. If you could possibly start putting these kinds of ideas into your mother-in-law’s thought processes now, it may give her a headstart to thinking positively if in fact she does lose her job. I’m not thinking negatively as if she will lose the job, just trying to add a little proactivity in my suggestion to you.
Thank you for writing!

A very dear friend and colleague of mine and excellent business consultant writes a fantastic blog called The Weakest Link. Click on that link and it will send you to his blog and an article on beginning businesses. I would suggest that you subscribe to his RSS feed and read what he has to say. He is very knowledgeable and has helped people begin new businesses for about 12 years now. His next article coming out is about starting a new business in today’s economy. Could be GREAT reading for you!
All my best to you with starting a new business and congrats! You can do it!

30|Jul|2008 15Yes the economic times are very hard, but this is a time for vast change. Change should not always be viewed as negative. Change has to happen in order to make room for something new, bigger and better! Don’t shun this change, embrace it as an opportunity to grow spiritually, mentally and physically into something all new and better. If stress didn’t come in some form, most of us would NEVER change for better or worse. It’s all how you view and what you make of it.
I know I’m electing to make some lemonade out of my lemons!! LOL
Dr. KC
30|Jul|2008 16Dear Reiki Chic,
I couldn’t agree with you more. Change happens for a reason.
I don’t usually like to impart my beliefs onto others or even share them for the most part as MY beliefs are not what are going to make good changes for others, instead they are the ones who are going to make their own changes. However, I will share here how I feel and the secret to how I attempt to help others.
In order for us to stay positive about the future and what is to come, we need to have the belief that everything happens for a reason. Along with that thought we need to add on “for a GOOD reason”. Now, we don’t HAVE or NEED to do this, but it sure is one way of staying positive that good things are going to follow bad things. I like to make lemonade too and I try to help others see that making a delicious juice from the lemons that are thrown at us, is probably a better way to get through hard times than wallowing in self pity. Again, this is only one doctor’s opinion.
Thank you for your wonderful comment.

01|Aug|2008 19Hi,
This is really a great post. I have to say with the gas and housing crisis, there are more and more people are worry about the economic but we should all try to be more positive and hope for a better tomorrow. My husband just told me that his company might be laying off more employees. My gosh. How terrible would that be? I can’t even image it.
Thanks for sharing this and your point of view. =)
