I have a dog that I took to China with me. I have had my dog for over 12 years and have been treated for depression and anxiety for 30 years. I didn't have my dog the first 18 months I was there, and I was wracked by anxiety and had trouble staying on an even keel at times. After my dog joined me, I was much more calm and centerd - and experienced far less anxiety. Why is it so hard to find a mental health professional who will write a letter for me identifying my dog as an emotional support animal? People seem skeptical - I am a high performing individual, but people don't realize the emotional difficulties many of us must grapple with on a daily basis.

Dear Leslie,

Unfortunately, I do not know of any therapists in the Southern California area that I could recommend. My suggestion to you would be to call your insurance company and ask for a list of doctors/therapists in your area. Spend some time calling each one and asking their offices if their doctors/therapists are familiar with writing letters for those in need of emotional support animals. Sometimes general practitioners will do this for you as well.

Please let me know how that goes.

All my best,
Dr. KC

Dear Leslie,

I am personally available at DOCintheBiz for consultation and online psychotherapy; however, unless I see a person face to face, I cannot write a letter for him/her. I'm sorry about that, but you can feel free to write to me anytime at the link provided in this comment.

Dear Leslie,

Any primary care physician or doctor in the mental health profession can write this letter for you. Visit your doctor and explain to him/her what the letter is if he/she is uncertain. Not all doctors are familiar with emotional support animals (ESA's) and the letters needed to make it possible to have one.

If your doctor is not familiar with ESA's, bring some information to your appointment to help him/her understand the impact an ESA can have for a person in need. That may help him/her feel more comfortable in writing this letter for you.

I hope this has helped and I wish you all the best,
Dr. KC

Dear Shannon,

It's a no wonder you're having a lot of stress at this time. You have a lot on your plate. Anyone facing these issues may experience anxiety related distress. You're not alone!

I'm glad your boyfriend is able to get the help he needs. It's time to figure out how you can get the help you need as well. Is there a specific reason you do not wish you seek help from a face to face therapist? I can certainly help you online here with what you are facing; however, you would definitely have to see a therapist or medical doctor in your area in order to get an emotional support animal letter. I am an avid advocate for having the unconditional love and companionship from an animal, but unfortunately, I can only write these letters for clients I see in office. I apologize and I wish I had better news about that.

I do understand your fear as many doctors do not understand this idea of emotional support animals. I can suggest that you call a few doctors anonymously and tell the office of your anxiety related issues and see if this is something they would do for you once examined. Don't get discouraged, but keep trying until you get what you want.

As I mentioned before, I can certainly help you, anonymously and inexpensively, with your anxiety issues here at DOCintheBiz if you choose.

I wish you the best of luck and please let me know how things go.

All my best,
Dr. KC
