“I think, therefore I am” – Descartes
This amazing quote by the man coined “The Father of Modern Philosophy” has been said to have been written by Descartes as he examined his beliefs in his own existence and found it impossible to doubt that he existed. Dare I say that I find this to be a very surface look at these very powerful words and may I take the liberty to dig a little deeper?
May I take the freedom to put another meaning to a very popular phrase that a man wrote sometime between 1596 and 1650? Wow, that’s a lot to ask, but I’m going to go out on a limb here. As I began to think about this quote, it jumped at me and I looked at it in a whole different way.
“I think, therefore, I am” What you “think” about yourself is what you will ultimately “become.” It all has to do with being secure with yourself, believing in yourself, and overall, having a true sense of who you are. No one ever reaches full self actualization, but just knowing who you are and what your limitations are, and beginning to find what will make you truly happy in life is a great step in the direction towards living a stress-free and happy life. I know, however, that it is A LOT easier said than done. And with influences from others, as well as the ones we put upon ourselves, it makes it even harder. What do you think?

24|Apr|2008 4Dr KC,
Blessings to you once again! I agree with your concept completely. The question I do have is, where would you say the extrinsic factor plays a role (if any) with this concept. As I look at todays society I find it challenging (as a youth director) to instill this concept you mentioned in the minds of the youth I serve, when society calls them problem children and trouble makers. Now, understand, although I find it hard, I don’t give up tring. I feel everyone deserves a chance to have someone believe in them as they seek to find strength to believe in themself.
I worked security at a mall for two years and the images that our youth have to compete with are disturbing. Models in magazines that don’t even look like they do in real life to machoism men such as in the movie 300. And yet…each week I tell my youth you set goals and dreams for their self and seek to believe and strive for what they want despite what media, movies and certain people will say they should or shouldn’t do.
I’m excited to hear your thought on this! I’ll be in touch soon.

24|Apr|2008 6Dear T-roy,
First of all, the children you worked with are blessed to have you as their counselor. I see you as someone who is constantly trying to learn and gain knowledge from where ever you can, not only for your own good, but to help others as well! Kudos to you!
When working with any children, including underprivileged children, which was my job for MANY years, it is often a challenge to teach them what is socially acceptable, to do “the right things” and “stay on the right path to be a successful and happy adult.” Unfortunately, most times, I found that what I taught them was unlearned when they re-enter their community and their homes. This is probably the most important “extrinsic factor” I am talking about in the original post. We, as counselors do the very best we can to teach children right from wrong, but ultimately the fate of our learners is out of our hands and more in the hands of society, the media, and the culture in which they live and are brought up.
When you teach other children or your own children, you do the very best you can to put them on the path to a good life and eventually, you have to trust the work you’ve done and let them off into the world, while hoping for the best. That is not meant to sound flip. It is the realistic world we live in and if we trust ourselves, we hope to trust our children.
The work you are doing is truly commendable and I KNOW you are making a difference each and every day.
Thank you for your comment.
